Can I Get My Book on Amazon Without a Publisher?

Yes , and here's everything you need to know before you take that leap.
I get this question a lot. Someone has poured months , sometimes years into writing a book, and then they hit a wall: Do I really need a traditional publisher to get this out into the world?
The short answer is no. The longer answer is what we're here to talk about.
At Fiara Publishing, we work with authors at every stage of their journey , from first draft to final listing, and one of the most liberating conversations we get to have is this one. Because yes, you absolutely can get your book on Amazon without a traditional publisher. And depending on your goals, it might actually be the smarter path.

How It Actually Works: Amazon KDP
Amazon has a platform called Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) — and it's exactly what it sounds like. You upload your manuscript, design your cover, set your price, and your book goes live on Amazon. Simple in concept, a little more nuanced in practice.
There are two formats you can publish through KDP:
eBook (Kindle) — your book lives digitally and readers can purchase and download it instantly
Paperback (Print-on-Demand) — Amazon prints a physical copy only when someone orders it, which means no upfront printing costs and no warehouse full of boxes in your living room
You keep a significant portion of royalties — up to 70% on eBooks priced between $2.99 and $9.99. That's actually far more than what traditional publishing typically offers authors.
What You'll Need Before You Upload
Here's where I want to be honest with you, because this is where a lot of first-time authors run into trouble.
The platform is free and open to anyone. But the book still needs to be ready. A rough manuscript uploaded with a stock photo cover and no editing is going to get lost — or worse, get negative reviews that hurt your reputation as an author.
To publish on Amazon and actually sell, you'll want to take care of:
1. A Well-Edited Manuscript
Amazon doesn't proofread for you. Readers are not forgiving of typos, inconsistent formatting, or structural problems. A professional edit — whether developmental, copy, or both — is not a luxury. It's the foundation.
2. A Cover That Commands Attention
We've written about this on our blog before: your cover is your first handshake with a potential reader. It needs to look professional, genre-appropriate, and compelling at thumbnail size. This is genuinely not the place to cut corners.
3. Proper Formatting
KDP has specific requirements for how your manuscript needs to be formatted — for eBook (usually a .epub or .mobi-friendly format) and for print (PDF with bleed, margins, spine width calculated based on page count). A formatting error can cause your book to be rejected or, worse, look unprofessional once printed.
4. An ISBN (For Print)
For paperback editions, you'll need an ISBN. KDP will assign you a free one, but it will be registered to Amazon. If you want full ownership of your ISBN, you'll want to purchase one independently.
5. Your Book Description and Metadata
This is your marketing copy. The description that appears on your Amazon listing is what converts a browser into a buyer. Keywords, categories, and your author bio all play a role in discoverability. Most authors underestimate how much this matters.
So Where Does a Publishing Partner Come In?
You might be reading this and thinking: If I can do it myself, why would I work with anyone?
That's a fair question. And the truth is, some authors can and do handle everything on their own. But most find that having experienced support makes the difference between a book that quietly exists on Amazon and a book that actually gets read.
At Fiara Publishing, we're not here to take ownership of your work or put our name where yours belongs. We're here to make sure your book looks and reads like the professional, meaningful work you intended it to be. That means cover design, editing, formatting, and publishing support with you in the driver's seat, always.
We're based in Istanbul, but we work with authors around the world. Whether you're writing your first book or your fifth, we'd love to be part of that journey.
A Quick Recap
To answer the original question simply:
Yes, you can get your book on Amazon without a traditional publisher. Amazon KDP makes the platform itself accessible to any author. What requires care — and often, professional support — is everything that makes a book worth publishing: the editing, the design, the formatting, and the strategy behind getting it seen.
You've already done the hardest part. You wrote the book. Let's make sure the world gets to read it.
